Like other polyethylene glycol allyl methyl ethers it is hydrophilic and biodegradable. Additional advantages include its compatibility with many materials, high heat resistance and low toxicity. With its allyl group Polyglycol AM 1100 has the necessary requirement for many different chemical reactions. Additional reactions with silyl compounds can be carried out very easily, and under certain conditions other radical reactions or radical polymerizations are also possible. In this way, agrochemicals, plastics in the construction industry and other polymers can be given the properties of polyethylene glycol, particularly hydrophilic properties right through to water solubility. Applications in this area include paint additives, PU foam stabilization, manufacture of water-soluble or water-dispersible paints, silicone chemistry and hydrophilic modification of polymers in general. Other applications include their use in combination with nitrites for corrosion protection (as an additive to hydraulic cement and cement for steel-reinforced concrete), and in paper bleaching (as a delignifying agent).
